2013 Tournament Wrap-up

logo_2013The third annual tournament saw a change in venue to the Garden Grove Recreation Center. Once again, we had eight teams participate, but with the two courts provided by the new venue, we were able to allow each team to play every other team during round-robin play. Teams played round-robin games all day Friday and on Saturday morning, then were seeded #1 through #8 based upon their overall record as we put everyone into the playoff bracket with a chance to win the tournament championship.

The first-seeded Hook-it-Up (Carson) team went 6-1 in the round-robin session and received a virtual bye in the first round as 0-7 Team Afakasi forfeited their match (Team Afakasi was a last-minute entry made up of young adults and forfeited all their matches by default, games against them in round robin play were “friendly” forfeits). Second-seeded West Covina (5-2 in round robin play) likewise were the beneficiaries of a forfeit by a 1-6 Anaheim 12th squad. The third-seeded Compton 1st squad (5-2) won their match against the sixth-seeded High Desert Hoopers (2-5) squad by a score of 57-52. The fourth-seeded Anaheim 8th team (5-2) met with the fifth-seeded Kingdom Business team (4-3) and Kingdom Business pulled off a convincing 55-38 victory to advance to the semifinals.

The first semi-final contest matched #1 seed Hook-it-Up (Carson) against #5 seed Kingdom Business and turned into a thrilling nip-and-tuck game, with the outcome in doubt until the final buzzer, when Kingdom Business came away with an upset victory by a tally of 50-49. The other semi-final matched #2 seeded West Covina against Compton 1st and ended with a 46-40 count with West Covina advancing to meet Kingdom Business in the final match.

The championship game was another terrific game, with neither team able to gain a great advantage over the other. West Covina pulled ahead in the waning seconds on a spinning layup but the game wasn’t decided until a last-second shot by Kingdom Business bounced away and the buzzer expired, giving West Covina a two-point victory.
